I left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple log cabins and structures from the timber on the land.

To all my subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

Hi James, things I have learned. About 14 years ago my wife and I bought 10 acres of forested land north of Kingston Ontario. First thing I bought was a stihl chainsaw, but the next was a Kubota tractor! Best purchase ever. It is a B3200, 32 HP. If I had it to do over I would have gone bigger, say in the 50 HP range. The back hoe is gear, the forks and bucket get a lot of use. One of the reasons I picked this is the Kubota dealer is very close and has been very helpful, also a front snow blower is an option. To be honest the bucket is not great for plowing snow. When you get larger there are more useful implements available. I noticed you and your friend looking at tractor brochures last episode so I thought I would chime in. I would encourage you to get one when you can. I know they are expensive but it will save you a lot of wear and tear on your body! Maybe next building should be a work shop to store a tractor and the atv out of the weather. I could go on and on but that’s it for now, looking forward to this Saturday morning.

I brought a stein. I brought beer. I brought tools. But next time… I’ll bring a paddle!

Just here with my weekly suggestion to build a ZIP LINE OF THE GODS from main camp to the river. Functional and great content. Would be epic!

Hi James carpenter here, a few tips.
1. The flashing tape looks good, usually the tape extends up the legs a bit more under the nailing flange too but no big deal, they also sell premade plastic corners if you want so you don't have to do the whole finicky cutting of multiple pieces of tape, the way you did it was fine though as well, also I don't think you did it but do not put any flashing tape over the bottom nailing flange on under otherwise any water that does get behind the tape is stuck and will rot the wall
2. Usually the window is ordered to match the thickness of the jack stud so the casing covers the gap, when the window or door is thinner than the framing like you have we install what is called an extension jam (pretty simple a quick you tube search will show you how)
3. Behind the trim headers I would spray an insect/rodent resistant expanding closed cell foam, most foam producers make a version, I think great stuff's is a green can, will ensure that you don't loose the R value from the gap, will crush down a bit and nothing should eat its way into the cabin
4. Two books I'd recommend for traditional construction techniques that I use as reference pretty often is A Roof Cutters Secrets by Will Holladay (held as the bible for stick framing by many, which I know wont help you with log cabins much but will definitely help with roof construction and out buildings) and Finish Carpentry by Gary Katz which shows and explains everything from ordering windows and doors to how to prep and install and custom finish carpentry and reference tables for angles and cuts in the back
Best of luck OOGA BOOGA

📌Need SAW DUST BUCKET next to Thunder Hole Box to cover "the business" & to keep the smell down & helps microbes breakdown the waste into usable compost.😅 Btw, you guys are hilarious! 😀
And great job felling trees! Baum fällt!🍺

I'm a biology teacher, who has done countless experiments with plant growth. My expert opinion is that the dead stem of Sif's red oak, has dug its roots primarily into Xander Budnick's poop.

Hi James, We love sitting down every Saturday evening here in 🇦🇺 with the family to watch your videos. My 7yr old daughters are totally invested in your project too! Thanks for recording your journey for us all.

I must admit my heart sinks James as you go through the summary, the realisation that the episode is coming to an end and has flashed by so fast. This episode had me laughing and l can see why you and Alex are good friends, it was a pleasure to see him help but unfortunate he couldn’t stay longer.
It was really lovely to see the baby of the homestead. I would really appreciate a bloopers episode as you must have excess footage, yet l appreciate the time involved editing our regular show, however a bloopers episode could be with less finesse as I’m sure it would be very entertaining.
The windows look shmick, chefs kiss.
Wishing you health and happiness from Australia

Funny coincident. I am watching from Germany from the very beginning and what got me interested was that I worked in the chinese entertainment industry as well, but out of Hong Kong. Now your german friend's hometown is only like a few miles from my hometown. Enjoy the wilderness and keep up the good work ! Respects from me !

As an inhabitant of Munich, I was wondering about the recent beer shortage here, but this explains it.

Stein tips!
1) Chill your beer AND your Stein in the cooler - it will stay cold longer.
2) Stein lids are PERFECT for outdoors - don't let bugs drink your beer!
3) thaw your frozen bratwurst on your beer to keep it cold as you prep dinner
4) in a pinch, steins can be used: to throw at a pesky bear (even if it breaks, it is a glorious death), as a character in a puppet show, and to collect berries and cherries.

quick tip for when felling trees. if they are stuck after your first cut, roll the log with the hook tool you use in the sawmill, to roll the tree. most times you can roll them off the tree they are stuck in
