Detailed Space Marine vs Spartan II- Coming from the Halo universe, the Spartans are super soldiers that were pivotal for the survival of humanity against alien threats like the covenant and the forerunners. They started as young kids being kidnapped, at least with the Spartan 2s, and they had to undergo a series of training and bio enhancing processes which includes augmentations and adorning the Power exoskeleton called Mjolnir. They are superhuman soldiers which far exceed the abilities of a normal person. So, what about the Space marine? These are transhuman soldiers and the greatest of the god emperor’s soldiers. They are barely Human at all, but superhuman; having been made superior in all respects to a normal man by a harsh regime of genetic modification, psycho-conditioning and rigorous training. They are untouched by plague or any natural disease and can suffer wounds that would kill a lesser being several times over. They are physically stronger, far more resilient and have genius level intellects. So with this introduction over, lets get to comparing them - pointwise.

The difference in the representation of Space Marines in video games and literature is quite profound, quite likely for obvious balancing in the games.

Video Games. Marines are essentially just big humans in bulky armour with large guns and melee weapons....walking tanks and damage sponges that deal hurt out.

Literature. Marines are described as super-human/trans human/demi-gods. Incredibly fast in movement and reactions ( humans often perceive them only as blurs of frenzied movement ) Highly intelligent and able to formulate advanced and complex battle plans on the fly and to take control of allied forces. Hugely strong and resistant to damage and having the ability to heal most injuries....basically described as apex predators even without their armour and weapons that only multiply their lethality to incredible levels.

I think this was said in another video comparing Spartans and Astartes; It's more appropriate to gauge the Spartans with the Scout Marines rather than standard Marines due to their similar roles on the battlefield. Obviously, a Tank will destroy an APC in a one-on-one fight, but it'd be foolish to compare the two in their combat performance based on that scenario alone.
Still always an interesting topic of discussion

As much as I like Spartans I think they are no much for Space Marines. Master Chief is an exception, he is to Spartans as Custodes to Space Marine

One major edge the UNSC would have over the Imperium is adaptability. The Imperium literally considers innovation to be a sin, whereas the UNSC would not hesitate to reverse engineer any Imperial tech they got their hands on. And if their history with stolen Covenant tech is any indication, they would probably improve on it.

If i remember correctly. Spartan 2 program was made to create a highly efficient counter incurgency units due to many colonies had problems in terms compliance, sabotaje, or completly going rogue. Concept that fell to backside as quickly as colonies began to turn into a glassed crators.
Astartes are made by the emperor of mankind himself to be a goddanm powdercake hammer from bloodborne. To beat any opposition either into complete submition, or the red mist. And their gear shows it quite prominently.
Bolters rips flesh into bits, meltas literaly melt through enemy armor. Hell. not many universes have coffins on legs with rotary autocanons and flamethrowers.
All i can say that they can't be compaired due to the purpose they were made for.

"They are equally fast"
True, but getting hit by a spartan running at that speed is like getting hit by a car. Getting hit by an astartes at that speed is like getting hit by an M1 Abrams Tank. One is just so much bigger and heavier than the other.

Space Marines are supposed to be completely over the top, like all WH40K, but I think the moment that they see John-117's service record the Space Wolves would give him a drink, the Salamanders would give him a hug, the Ultramarines would check luck skills, and the Imperial Fists would give him a thumbs up. As for the Ravenguard, they probably would leave a card saying "good job".

Now imagine the imperium has spartans as sub space marines but this time they make their own augumentaions

With the sheer discrepancy in augmentations between Spartans and Astartes, they can’t be compared. Astartes were made to be the angels of death, walking one man war machines. 20 odd implants, a touch of the warp, and originally crafted by a god

Barring the games, because games are meant to be fun and balanced, Spartans are only strong when in their fireteams. Even then, a handful are hardly enough to turn the tide of war. Chief is literally the only exception: he has luck, he’s the player character. We’re not talking about him. A single plasma round is enough to cripple them in Mjolnir armor.
With the level of augmentations they have compared to space marines, they’re the equivalent to Kasrkin or Scions. Shock troopers, commandos, lightly augmented infantry in comparison. All they have are metal grafted bones and the neural suite to properly wear Mjolnir without harming themselves; a brute or elite is more than enough to kill a Spartan, realistically. A demon is just unfair

And don't forget the astartes have several redundant organs including a 2nd heart and 3rd lung so even if you land a shot that penetrates their armor and then their rib plate (yes their rib cage was fused into a solid, incredibly durable, plate) and takes out a heart or lung it's still not a guaranteed kill. On top of that their organs are also just super advanced in general so even a clean headshot may not drop them either. And just to top it off they have an insane pain tolerance. Like i'm pretty sure that for things that we'd consider low to medium pain they don't even feel it so even if you do land some shots they're just gonna shake it off and keep going. Really the best way to take down anything in 40k is with an overwhelming amount of firepower, anything less and there's always a chance that all you did was piss off whatever you were trying to kill. Oh and 1 last thing. I don't think their life span has ever been mentioned, we do know that they can and have lived past 1000 years, but they usually start slowing down around that time, however there has never been a space marine that has died of natural causes. There was an alien species that could rapidly age people and they did that to kill astartes, but we're talking like hundreds of years if not thousands in just a couple minutes, literally turning them into dust on the spot. A primarch was also hit by it and i think he was aged by like 3000 years or so, but that was a primarch so small things like being aged by 3000 years in a few minutes doesn't really affect them

The spartan 2s first combat experience was when the spartan 2s were around 14 and around 16 when the covenant appeared

The SPARTAN-II program was a one off special forces top secret project. And the means to make them was incredibly arduous AND had a high attrition rate. Of the 120 or so candidates taken at the age of 6, by their completion and receiving the MK I Mjolnir Armor (Book: Fall of Reach), they had roughly a platoon left of the original company sized group of individuals. Much of them lost from training accidents, and over half of them from the augmentation procedures. By the time the Human-Covenant War began, there was no plan in place to begin a new batch of SPARTAN-II's. And the SPARTAN-III program would begin under the tutelage of another UNSC ONI Officer on Onyx, but they're development was rooted in a bit of morbid necessity as the various groups of orphans (as opposed to kidnapped children) taken, trained and augmented, would often be sent on suicide missions that had a near total 100% casualty rate, but their missions were also profoundly necessary and deep behind Covenant lines on vital infrastructure, logistics, and command structure. The SPARTAN-IV program was headed by the UNSC itself and took volunteers due to a refined form of the process. But even then, they're still few in number and their resilience still paled in comparison to the SPARTAN-II's.

The Space Marine, on the other hand, was hand crafted with the purpose of conquest and dominance of the war zone. And the original 20 Legions all had specializations that they were qualified to perform within their school of war. Even with the advent of the Horus Heresy, the subsequent Fallout and the various Dark Ages that the Imperium faced, the Space Marines and their equipment, was improved upon. Notwithstanding the Librarians, we're also talking about Marines who were tasked out to the Adeptus Mechanicus to be, essentially, War Smiths schooled in the arts and ways of the Machine and the Machine Cult. Then you have those who volunteer for Special Forces or Special Task Groups (like the Deathwatch or an Inquisitor's Retinue to perform task specific roles in their investigations). Then you have the secretive formations, like that of the Grey Knights, whom 99% of the Imperium, have no idea even exists or operates. The Grey Knights, themselves, are on a level equivalent to the Emperor's own divine resistance to Demonic Influence, have the best equipment and weapons, and are specifically tasked with waging war against the Demonic Entities that manifest within the Imperium. Even more so, they answer to no one save the Emperor. And due to the necessity for secrecy, those whom they support and operate with, are often mind wiped or even killed, (and not only due to the necessity for secrecy, but also the fear of corruption. A number of battles in which they fight alongside the Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum) often see the Guard wiped out by the hands of the Grey Knights, because the corruptive nature of witnessing and battling Demonic Entities in the Material world would indelibly destroy those Guardsmen who fought to win...) thus maintaining the secrecy of the Grey Knights itself.

Even considering the enemies, the Spartans had difficulty with the Covenant and the attrition rate slowly dwindled their numbers. So horrible was the attrition rate that its now presumed that John 117 is the LAST of his Spartan II's (as Halo Infinite has made no mention of his fellow Blue Team, or that of Grey Team), and Halo Infinite also showed the complete destruction of the UNSC Infinite's own retinue of SPARTAN IV's. And this, against the Covenant and Brutes, as well as the Flood and Forerunners.

The Space Marines are fighting a plethora of unique and very powerful foes. Whether it be the T'au and their mobile mech-suits and long range weapon systems, or their traitorous brother astartes in the Chaos Legions, and as mysterious as the Tyranid Hive Fleets outside of the known universe, to the slumbering Necrons who slumbered for many millennia before awakening to, once again, purge all life from the Cosmos. And all of these factions with a plethora of unique capabilities and titanic strengths that the Space Marines necessitate such immense weapons of destruction, and often a Company of Space Marines cannot fight alone, needing other Chapter's fellow companies, multiple companies of one Chapter, the Imperial Guard, the Inquisition's various Ordos', the Sisters of Battle, the Titan Knighthood, the Adeptus Mechanicus and now even the Adeptus Custodes.

Ultimately, Warhammer 40K, in its machinations, can't be comparable to any other universe as it takes everything and ramps it up to infinite in regards to sheer madness, war, and grimdark.

How is it that Spartans inferior but are able to take down fleets of enemies but a single space marine can't even take down a carnifex

It's not even a competition if you read the lore for both... The Space Marines are on a whole other level even compared to the Spartan 2's. This is mostly due to the fact that they are not for the same purpose though... The Spartan's are a precise tool for precise missions while the Space Marines are walking shock and awe. It's like comparing an Arabian race horse to a Shire horse honestly as they were not built for the same job. Still the Space Marines can fill the role that the Spartan's do but the Spartans can not fill the same roll that the Space Marines do. Frankly I think the Marines would like the Spartans seeing them as more useful then Guardsmen but not as useful as a fellow battle brother while the Spartans would just be glad it's not all riding on them to do the heavy lifting with the Space Marines around.

A spartan is supposed to have a 20 millisecond reaction time. A cats reaction time is between 20-70 milliseconds. A human eye blink is 100-400 milliseconds. Space marines have been described as sidestepping during a blink and being somewhere else by the time the eye opens. So it puts the space marines as bare minimum 99 milliseconds (faster then an eye blink) at the very least? But are they as fast as 20 milliseconds? In the table top rules they had the same initiative as an Eldar guardian and the Eldar are insanely fast and agile so who knows really?

As bad ass as Spartans are, a space marine would calmly approach them, caress their shoulder, and gently insert their hand straight through their skull
