You don't have to worry about it mixing in if the krausen is high, the yeast colony will get to it all, don't worry. Mead and wine makers do this all the time.

I throw it in ever brew, I figure it doesn't add too much cost to the brew, it can't hurt, and its just a little bit of an insurance.
