I love his entire build up to having mega absol and the getting one shot by a clawitzer once he has a chance to use it.

What I really love when you do this "I'm a ... gym leader", is the fact you are so in your role.
Doesn't matter if you're a plant gym leader ("oh, look at all those flowers and gras here, beautiful") or a dark one.

Although it was funny when Absol immediately died, I feel like the Hydreigon could've been used. The story could've gone the way where he conquers the league with a Pseudo Legendary. Still fun!

I actually did notice that Dark is the only type of the Kalos starters that does not have a specialist.

Water: Siebold
Fire: Malva
Grass: Ramos
Fighting: Korrina
Psychic: Olympia

So, Mikey doing a Dark type run makes sense.
