In a report that was recently released by the UN, it was revealed that in the past year, hackers backed by North Korea’s government had stolen as much as 400 million dollars in cryptocurrency.In the report, these cyber attacks were noted as being an "important revenue source" for funding Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, and that in the past few years, North Korea has accumulated well over 2 billion dollars through such methods.

Speaking on this report, the former US Assistant Attorney General, John C. Demers stated that, “North Korea’s operatives, using keyboards rather than guns, stealing digital wallets of cryptocurrency instead of sacks of cash, are the world’s leading bank robbers”.
