Population growth and climate change explained by Hans Rosling

Let me show you the world, says Swedish academic Hans Rosling as he demonstrates the dynamics of population growth, child mortality and carbon dioxide emissions.

The challenge for the world is to get everyone out of extreme poverty and get the richest people to use less fossil fuels so that everyone can share their energy levels, he says.

A very optimistic view of the future. I hope this happens, but I won't hold my breath. I'd much rather trust human greed and lack of empathy for others' suffering.

Last part is so wrong. No more than 2 billion can be wealth in a world with this size and resources, simple math !

not so simple.. we may never have an alternative to fossil fuel for aviation and heavy heavy industrial purposes. certainly nothing so cheap. every form of energy has a cost. non renewable resources of numerous type are needed for photovoltaics and wind power, western world can not have its level of affluence today without a poor majority.. we need cheap wage slaves and totalitarian govts with social control and no ecological considerations to be able to supply all the cheap products we enjoy..

How wonderful. We can have ten times as many people as we have now. What fun. It reminds me of the Star Trek episode where a planet was so crowded that no one could move. But this Swedish guy comes across as an extremely naive dude. Does he have no consideration for the rest of the earth’s life forms? When the human population reaches 10, 11, 12 billion people then where will Nature live? Of course, this guy doesn’t even see it. I’m so tired of people like him.

If the population were smaller, there would be much more to share without the need to live as if we were in the middle ages. I talking a lot lot, half a billion at the most.

Population is not a problem in the west. Most Western nations have stable or declining population. The 3 billion people added to the world population will come from the poorest of countries.

"share"? .. yeah, right. That's going to happen.

Numbers of children per couple drops as wealth goes up, so if the world does get wealthier (and healthier) then total popn will level out.

Nobody's having kids. We've done our bit.

RIP Hans Rosling your clever fool - he dealt in statistics but could't really see what was happening around him.

Almost right, except that correlation doesn't imply causality.

If governments had poured as much subsidy into renewable energy sources as they have into fossil fuels in the past 6 decades, then we'd be rich, healthy AND non-polluting. Also worth noting that fossil fuel extraction from the global south, to feed consumers in the global north, keeps countries poor.

No, emissions from developed countries will remain the same or increase slightly and emissions from developing countries will sky rocket as they undergo there own industrial revolutions, mostly powered by OCG (Oil, Coal and Gas)

Such a knowledgeable man. We at the Karolinska Institute's students' association magazine interviewed him in April and published the interview as our cover story. Absolutely brilliant, Dr. Rosling!

I wonder if we humans are going to institute thoughtful population reduction programs, if we are going to be brutal, or if we are going to let systemic failures reduce population.

Why not just reduce the population and we can all live like rich people.

Too much of anything can be bad, that doesnt mean everything is pollution and should be taxed.
