I've never heard anyone explain this to me but it makes sense. I generally use a semi-western grip but for low shots I'll use an eastern grip.

I need to switch to this grip. I use an eastern grip.

Love this explanation! Most of the other videos fail to mention this slightly closed racquet face!

I was using the SW grip for awhile but it became too hard to keep the ball in the court as my racket head speed improved. So I gradually moved to a full western grip and boy am I glad I did. I can wail away at the ball with tremendous topspin and power. It's helped all facets of my game. I hit better on the rise because the racket face is more closed and approach shots also are hit harder. Very low balls that have been the bane of this grip are nicely hit with vertical forehands with power. And buggy whip forehands are easy too (yes there is a distinction). It's also easier to hit falling away shots too. There is really nothing this grip can't do. And even if a pro uses a SW grip, at times they will close the racket more depending on the shot which is basically a FW. And some pros use a multitude of grips making small changes depending on the court position and shot selection. I predict over time nearly every pro will use the FW grip to avoid all these grip changes.

i’ve used a semi western grip for years but not sure if i should go back to eastern . i’m not swinging hard enough or with enough penetration.

Just lost a first round of a men’s singles at my club after being the runner up the two previous years .

We play on slow hard courts .

great info! What's your take on semi-western for One-handed Backhand and how does it differ from an eastern grip?

Would love to see a video on how to change from one to the other. My coach says it's hard to change because the grip changes alot of other mechanics as well??
