Billy Paul had worked the East Coast supper club circuit for years prior to signing with Philadelphia International Records in 1971. His set list contained mostly jazz oriented songs and his first album release on the new label featured that material. The public didn't buy it. When the album, 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, was released in 1972, the hit, Me And Mrs. Jones, put Billy Paul on the national scene. Am I Black Enough For You, from the same album, was the follow up single to the smash hit. It didn't sell well at all, putting Paul in danger of being regarded as a one hit wonder. Fortunately, further hits ensued in the rest of the decade, blending Billy's unique vocal style and natural instincts towards jazz.

Brings back a whole lot of memories.. The revolution was in full swing back in 1972.
I had just finished 7th grade abt to go to 8th grade. 'Black is Beautiful' 'The future was COLOR-FULL' 'The Revolution will NOT be televised' & then drugs began to flood our 'hoods. This was no accident.
How did the cartels know where to send drugs into the inner cities? They didn't, but Govt insiders knew. We will never know their names, but the agenda was familiar.. Take thm down b4 they get too high & mighty. Billy Paul's #AmIBlackEnoughForYou still punches you in the gut if you hate on ppl w/ more melanin than you & is still an anthem of empowerment if you have more melanin in your skin. Either way, my middle school yrs in #NewYorkCity opened my eyes to a possibility where skin-color, melanin & blackness could be seen as positives, not negatives. Far too many of us had begun to internalize racism.. hurting, killing & making life difficult for other ppl who shared our colors. Black on black hate. I pray that #BlackIsBeautiful4Ever that #LoveIsLove & that #ImBlackEnoughForYouAlways #PeaceLoveEmpowermentCHANGE : My ppl are brave, courageous, strong & like #MJ #INVINCIBLE❤️
