In my opinion, on stage was one of the best albums Blackwoods did.

That Long Beach RCA Victor LP by Hovie & The Statesmen Quartet is simply called, “A Gospel Concert” and RCA reference numbers of LSP-2647. Then after that their next live songs were recorded at the National Quartet Convention from 1963 and had on the same LP the Blackwood Brothers, The Stamps Quartet, The Speers, The Kingsmen, and the Oak Ridge Boys. That album was also on RCA Victor, #LSP 2728, but released on CD just a few years ago through the National Quartet Convention itself.

My father bought this album at one of their concerts as soon as it was released in 1963. I grew up hearing this one along with their Hymn Sing album at our house regularly. I learned every song on them!

This is real classic singing. No group sounds that good today.

I was there that night at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium. A great night where both the Blackwoods and the Statesmen recorded RCA Victor live albums. Both groups had just bought identical Flxible (correct spelling) tour buses. It was an exciting evening and I cherish the memory of James, Bill, Cecil, J.D., and Wally Varner. My heroes.

Excellent comments from all y'all. My ten siblings and I were raised on this music. What makes our story somewhat unique is that my parents emigrated from Nicaragua to the U.S. in the mid-50's when Elvis was becoming all the rage. Ma & Pa insisted we listen to The Blackwoods & The Statesmen, almost exclusively. Happy Goodmen were good, but Hovie Lister was my dad's favorite (maybe because, like Hovie, my dad was a Southern Baptist pastor -- another strange anomaly in itself). Anyway, we lived in Wilmington near L.A., and I'm pretty sure we attended this concert. I don't remember the concert, but my older brothers constantly talked of it and pretended to be in concert themselves when they bought the album. --thanks for posting this! From West Virginia, almost heaven.
