Argon one V2 Vs ice tower cooler Test. Part 3

After all the comments about heat build up I figured I would test the case for longer

Great test! I personally use the Miuzei MC23-4. Cheap and perfectly made. The heat sink is adjacent to the most important elements. I recommend it with all my heart!

Hilarious GTA game play. I would love to see a Let's Play series where you test out retro games and emulators on various Pi's.

I don't have an argon case but something i would look at doing is seeing if there is enough clearance inside of the case for an ice tower, then cut a hole or vents in the top to supply air. 3d printing a new lid to accommodate the ice tower is also an option

Great stuff! Love to see updated ultimate overclock guide plz?

Might replacing the Argon's fan with one by Noctua help? Noctuas are know to be very effective and quiet.

Is Netflix picking you up for season 2? 🙂

I actually lost the top for my argon case. But I customized the setup for my argonONE fan to come on at 10% speed at 35 degrees and step up 10% every 5 degrees. But I never get higher than 60 degrees. I also use thermal paste instead of the pads they give you and I have the nvme base which runs so much smoother.

I use the default fans setup: 10% @ 55'C, 55% @ 60'C then 100% @ 65'C. Logs show:

My old ears cannot hear the fan unless I get very close, and then I get a warm ear.

I'm shocked at the sound of the fan. Mind even full speed is whisper quite. Even during the worst of the summer when it was hitting 80C+ you had to get right up to it to hear it. Maybme you got one with a bad fan, or some how I got lucky and got a good one! I do prefer the desk pi cases as they stay cool and quite. But I do like the little argon ones!

That fan sounds like it's hitting something, definitely not normal sound

Do you had overclocked the pi in the Argon case also to 2147Mhz? Because I'm surprised how smooth youtube is running at 1080p and still capable to handle file operations and emulation.

I received my 52Pi rack tower over the weekend. I ended up mounting the Argone one V2 to the top layer using 2.5mm x 25mm machine screws purchased from a hardware store. I'm going to mount a powered 4-port, USB 3.1 hub to the second layer and the bottom two layers will have two 3.5 inch to 2.5 inch double layer SSD mounts screwed into the mount holes in the plastic. I have 1TB SSD's in one of the mounts. I'm plannng to remove those and substitute in 2TB SSDs each, along with the 500GB M.2 in the Argon case.

If the Argon case-fan is annoying, this may be a quieter option. The top of the tower fan is able to blow enough air over the Argon one case to cool the metal, and to blow air around the M.2 case.

I cannot hear the fan in my unit. I had to put my ear right next to it to tell if it was working when I 1st got it. I live in NYC so much hotter here in a room with no AC. I run the default Argon settings. I always wonder if its my hearing or I have a quiet unit when I see comments about the noise ??? Mine is nowhere near the sound I could hear in the video ?

No, my fan is not that loud. Contact them and I bet they send you a new fan.

The problem with the Argon case is not really the fan comes on (yeah it's a little noisy). The problem is with the magnetic lid on top the Argon is a PASSIVE cooler ONLY regardless of fan. The Argon is an amazing passive cooler. But there are situations you need active cooling. The reason this happens if you look you'll notice heat from the fan is vented through a hole under the magnetic lid. Through moving air this transfers the heat to the aluminium lid and into the rest of the case. The air intake for the Argon is a air hole gap in the GPIO pins under the lid. This intake is the closest to the fan so the Argon fan will pull air from here instead of the side holes. So heated air is blown against the magnetic lid and pulled back in at the GPIO because the lid holds the heated air to the case. If you take the lid off some of the heat escapes and the case can cool actively. Leep you are in a very cold room so your active cooling is very efficient. Here in the summer time for me the temperature is around 78F peak. This is enough with the magnetic lid on running the same overclock settings as you to cause an overheat CPU throttle playing emulation. It takes a while for that big Argon case to heat up. But when it does passive cooling is not enough. After some experimentation I learned to only way to keep from throttling was to keep the lid off the Argon. Leep a good test for you to show would be to see if the Argon fan provides ANY benefit with the lid on. Your in a cold room so it will be harder for you to test. But I think it would be a good test to have you as a 3rd party tester confirm this situation with the Argon? :)

@leepspvideo Off topic: I am considering buying a 27"-32" computer screen to replace my 24" Roku tv. I'll be using a Fire Stick. Can you recommend a screen, please?

So regarding your non working 1gb pi
i might have a theory
if you updated it's eeprom and it somehow got so corrupt it can't even flash itself properly again then maybe the chip has to be flashed using an external flasher?
ideally you should try debugging your pi with a serial debugger see if that outputs anything

second theory
your pi somehow shorted out
can accidentally happen if you drop something near the gpio pins
how it will act if it's shorted: power LED stays on, act blinks once (Matches what is seen in the video)

hopefully it's not fried but those are my theories

Heat is what kills and shortens the life span of all computer parts. My fan is always on and the pi will idle at 26c to 32c depending on the days temp... Play Youtbe videos all day long 32c to 37c, no heat build up... Stress test with sysbench wont hit 50c.. Fan is an old 12 volt . 60mm case fan out of a IBM desktop PC.. Ideal fan would be 5 volt noctuha on the 3 volt pin..Whats good about the 60 mm fan I can mount my Pi on stand offs with the sd card end of the pi mounted between 30 mm stand offs.. Above and below the pi... 60 mm fan screws into the stand offs and looks very much like your new low profile Ice cooler.... Home made cases and heat sinks. Out performs store bought every day of the week..

I replace the fan in my argon case and it's a lot quieter . The fan that comes with that sucks.
