Description:
Creating space is important. Each level of the game you move up you have less and less time and space on the ball. So the more you can do to create space and time for yourself on the field, the more successful you will be.
Key Points:
1. Take a Defender one way, then go the other!
2. Run behind the Defender, not in front of them, so they can't see you.
3. When the defender turns their head to look for you, that's when you cut back in the opposite direction.
4. This movement can be a few steps or a big run. It all depends on the situation.
Equipment Needed: Ball, five cones and a partner. If you don't' have a partner use a wall or fence or simulate this exercise without someone passing to you.
Exercise Player Can Do:
Set up three cones a few steps apart from each other in a straight line. Then place a fourth cone five yards to the side of those cones and a fifth cone 10 yards ahead of the fourth cone.
Your partner stands 10 yards ahead of the three cones. You stand on the edge of the three cones. Imagine in a game these cones are one defender marking you. Now make a movement, behind the cones, to create space, open up to the fourth cone, receive the pass and dribble to the fifth cone. Repeat 10 times, and then switch your partner.
Repeat until you are tired. Set up the cones in different areas and distances to create different game situations where creating space is needed. You be creative!
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If you are not able to create space with this type of run make sure you are not running in front of the defender. If so, they can see you more easily and anticipate your run. Run behind the defender when possible.
Bonus Tip:
When you turn to run and create space, keep your body open to your teammate and the field. Don't turn and run with your back to your teammate not looking at the ball.
