I got the Intel Pentium G3258 for $20... Was it worth it?

Seven years ago, Intel released the Pentium G3258 processor which was not only a celebration of Pentium's 20th anniversary, but also a rare lower-end chip that was unlocked for overclocking. The question is: how does it hold up today?

I bought one of these back in the day and still have it. I had it stable at 4.5 and hit 4.7 but it was not the most stable. It would run for an hour or two and blue screen. I should dig it out and tweak it to run stable at 4.7. I hit the silicon lottery with that guy. 4.7 was hard to come by back then.

I was just thinking about these chips yesterday and got your video on my YouTube suggested today. I feel like the tech scene back then was so much more interesting than today because back then you got lots of cool, random, quirky stuff like this.

I grabbed a few of these years back when they were liquidating them for practically nothing. I wouldn't use it for PC gaming anymore, but they make excellent budget Linux builds or Batocera boxes.

I picked it up at the electronics waste dump. I installed windows 11 with iso. I don't think it's for gaming anymore. It's still fine as a web surfing machine.

Glad to know that a 2014 intel dualcore can compete with a 2019 amd dualcore.

These are pretty weak overclocks considering basically all g3258 and 4690k can hit at least ~4.3Ghz and most of them can hit 4.4 or 4.5...
I own both of these and both can do 4.5 easily on a cheap 212 Evo cooler and staying in the 1.2Xv range

Shocked to see everyone on YouTube stuck at 4.7ghz and less for these, as mine does 5.2. Difference being I use a Z97 board and every video I saw was B85 or z87. Been using it as a Minecraft server and living room game system
