Note, when λ —> infinity, we get the Madhava series. If we only take the first 4 series in the formula and take λ = 3 then this formula approximates pi to within 0.0014368 😳 more on this in upcoming videos!

As a guy said, the fundamental theorem of engineering goes as follows
3=pi=e=2

It wasn‘t mathematicians who discovered it but physicists. They discovered it while working on String Theory, which makes the discovery accidental in the first place

Don't forget that lambda being a negative integer causes the series to be undefined.

Me watching this short as if I understand any of this:

At least mention the names of those mathematicians.

Pi is a limit. Modern quantum
physics will tell you that spacetime is measured in a cubic lattice. This is a geometric fallacy. Pi is also 180' radians, given that the three angles of a euclidean simplex are 60'. So a unit triangle has a value of pi. This is fundamental to understanding the unified field equation

I though that 2 physicists working on string theory did this discovery.

if π is equal to 4 + a convergent series, wouldn't that series give us a new transcendental irrational number that converges to it?

If you really think about what this means, we encounter another problem that we can't solve directly, so we represent it as a number and symbolize it. It's almost as if we call it 'x' and can approximate 'x' to as many digits as we want, but we still don't know exactly what it is.

Did you hear about the constipated mathematician? He worked it out with a pencil.

they "accidentally" discovered this

Notation help, please: what is the (n-1) subscript at the end of the expression?

Why don't we put lamba as pi and solve the equation?

Just learnt sigma notation in my maths class, but I still have no idea what you said! 😂

Ah yes, of course! Something more to add to make students studying calculus in the future suffer more.

A series whose sum is unchanged by changing the value of a parameter, but converges at different rates depending on its value? That's mental to me.

I'm also wondering how you'd even measure rate of convergence. I mean I'm sure there's plenty of simple methods, but I'm trying to think of a way to assign a number to a series measuring the overall rate of convergence?
Like maybe something that would assign 1/2 to 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 +..., and 1 to 1 + 0 + 0 +...
So... a value between 0 and 1 measuring the average proportion of progress made in each term, if that makes sense. If you go halfway each time that's 1/2, if you get there instantly it's 1, etc.
