WinForms Map Control: Vector Tile Support

As you may already know, our WinForms Map Control allows you to integrate and leverage the capabilities of tile-based mapping services such as Bing and OpenStreetMap. Both Bing and OpenStreetMaps are built from a set of tile images at multiple zoom levels. When an end-user zooms or pans the current map view port area, a new set of raster tiles is downloaded from the server.
Unfortunately, raster tiles come with a few disadvantages. For instance, you cannot modify map style or captions in a client application. To address the limitations of raster files, many map services also offer vector tile maps. Unlike raster tiles, vector tiles do not contain an actual map image – instead, they include a set of vector shapes or geometries that are processed on the client side. This makes it possible to apply custom map styles and change map content based on regional settings, screen resolution, etc.
In this video I will describe our Map Control’s newest feature – support for vector tile providers. and show you how to use this new provider to load vector maps from an MBTiles file.
