SATELLITE pics show Vladimir Putin is burning £8.4million of unused gas every day - while families face crippling energy bill hikes.

Massive orange flames are seen shooting into the sky at a natural gas plant after Russia shut the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Europe.

International gas prices rocketed after Russia invaded Ukraine, and spiked again after it shut off the undersea pipeline.

Households across Europe face potential blackouts and energy rationing, while today the UK price cap almost doubled.

Putin has been accused of putting a squeeze on Europe in revenge for its support for Ukraine and sanctions on the regime.

And now images from space show gas "flaring" on a massive scale at Gazprom's compressor plant at Portovaya north of St Petersburg.

I think they have too. Once gas wells like these are producing, it can't be turned off without destroying the well, which would have to be sealed with mud and concrete. So they reduce it as much as possible then vent the overpressure and burn it off.

A godwill action from Putin, all contributions to global heating minimize the need for local heating.

These are the "Olympic flames" of the Russian lose-lose games: The production of oil and gas cannot be stopped without the wells being closed and then silting up anyway. Restarting the conveyor systems is then even more complex and expensive than drilling new ones. In addition, the conveyor systems are increasingly wearing out and cannot be repaired without western technology and western engineers. The extracted, but largely unsaleable gas and oil quantities cannot be stored in Russia because the capacities for this are lacking. Now Russia burns the extracted amounts for nothing and again robs itself of a large part of its future possible income. The countries China and India, often mentioned as major buyers of Russian raw materials, hardly import a 20th of what Western Europe alone had imported. It won't be much more either. If the demand was higher, these two countries could have bought more in previous years. They don't have that because they don't need more. However, they can drive the prices for Russian supplies to rock bottom and below, since they are now the only remaining significant buyers and Russia depends on these two countries for better or for worse.
I don't think it can get any better for Russia.

We've got plenty of gas here in North America, once Europe builds enough LNG capacity we'll totally replace gas supplies for Europe. And be a much more stable and reliable energy partner than Russia can ever be.
