I once was hiking with a friend and we came to a bridge. We said: everyone can cross a creek by using a bridge. Let's cross it without the bridge. So we took off our boots in order to keep them dry and waded through the water which was not too deep but pretty cold. On the other shore the stone that I was standing on turned black because of the water dripping off me. The stone my friend was standing on turned red! He was bleeding heavily because he stepped into a piece of glass, maybe a broken beer bottle. We made first aid and managed to stop a car who took us to hospital where the wound had to be sewed. We learned: bridges are quite helpful. Use them! Or better get wet boots than injured feet.
