The Sunset Crochet Jumper | beginner friendly crochet project!

Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!

I've done it again. Not satisfied with how much time and space sewing and knitting take up, I've also picked up crochet! I tried a while back but couldn't get past making endless chains. Under the supervision of my friend Elena, I was able to graduate first to a blanket and then a jumper. This jumper design was devised by my friend Elena as an easy, beginner friendly project that taught both her and myself how to crochet jumpers and transferrable crochet skills.

For this project, you will need a 4 mm crochet hook and DK yarn. I used Hayfield Spirit DK, which gives the beautiful gradient. I used approximately four 100g balls of the yarn. However, you may need more if you make it less cropped! This is also a very flexible pattern, as it's made only of rectangles, and therefore you can adapt it to any kind of yarn and hook size for different textures (I've also made in a chunky yarn for a big jumper!). If you would like more written instructions, there is a PDF available to all tiers on my Patreon.

I learned to crochet before I learned to knit, but I don't generally like the look (other than lace/fillet) so I knit wearables instead of crocheting them. This is the first crochet jumper I've looked at and thought, "I want to wear that!" Love the explanation!

This is gorgeous! I saw the thumbnail, and thought Wow! What a pretty striped top! I wonder where she found the fabric?! What a surprise!!! Crochet!! Don't find the stripe, MAKE the stripe! LOVE IT!

Lol, that's the way I was taught to hold the hook from my grandmother whom had been taught by her mother the same way. Lovely pattern and it's always good to branch into other crafts. 💚

I kind of feel like collecting hobbies is a thing a lot of us do as a hobby... I recently started making soaps and I want to make and start using a triangle loom... I've been crocheting for years but self-taught and don't know what anything's called and if I'm trying to follow a pattern, I have to look up every stitch and write it out longhand....

Thanks so much for this, I think I finally understand what a half double crochet stitch is, and that's a brilliant way to do increases and decreases. I've got this video tagged for when I do this year's crochet project! I never would have thought of using different stitches to make ribbing, and that back loop only thing looks very interesting! I have a couple yarns I think will make great sweaters but I can't knit worth a crap (ok I could knit 30 years ago but never learned how to purl after like a year of trying to make my stupid hands do it) so I'm always on the lookout for wearable crochet projects! I've got some rainbow and black yarn I bought just knowing I'd have to do something with it but I think this might be the project, presuming I've got enough of it.

Beautiful!! Lovely final result - and yes, that linen version sounds amazing!

I love this! I made a structurally similar knitted jumper as the first big project on a vintage knitting machine. Need to finish the neckline, but now I’m inspired to finish it. Thanks for sharing!

That's such a nice yet simple design! Love it!
As a crocheter with a whole queue of projects in my mind I really didn't need a new one... but seeing this I really feel like I need one. A bit longer version, which is easily done with a pattern so versatile. And I already have an idea for yarn as well.
Thank you for the video! It's great to see other creators being multicraftual as well :)

The colors in both of those sweaters are absolutely gorgeous! They both look great on you. I just got into crocheting myself, and I'm really interested in making sweaters, so I think I'll give this pattern a try. Thank you for the tutorial!

This is really fabulous and looks stunning on you! I love crochet but have always been nervous about tackling a jumper, but I think you have inspired me to give this one a go! I am in Australia, so it's currently Spring.. therefore if I start now I will have a change to get it done in time for the colder months! EEEK! Exciting! Thank you.

That’s lovely! Maybe I should try my hand at crochet again. The pattern definitely looks easy enough that I might give it a try

Very cute jumpers, personally I would make it longer, I'm too old and lumpy to wear cropped clothes. ❤

I'm always fascinated by people whose brains find crochet easier. I've been knitting since I was young, and finally got crochet to click a few years ago. For me, knitting is much more mindless because the stitches are always held right there for you. I can knit simple things without even looking. Crochet, you constantly have to be reading your work to see where to put your hook for the next stitch. I find that more challenging.

You are not holding the hook weird. It is called the knife hold. I find that is more comfortable when using heavier yarn. What I do find interesting is you are using American names for the stiches. Usually the UK patterns from you country are given a different name. You have done really well on your "jumper" I think you do need one in cotton.

I hold my hooks the same way. It’s comfortable and my hand doesn’t get tired. The jumpers is beautiful. I’m also self taught thanks to books( pre internet).

i love it! its a wonderful neckline and the yarn is a great colour blend...i really dont like to either knit or crochet, probably because we learned that before learning to write, being a girl and all, a must lol...but i may pick up my crochet hook for this...well done

What a cute make! I have made crochet toys before and a crochet jumper once but they always seemed a bit stiff. I think this rib style looks so much more comfortable. I’ll have to give it a go! Thanks for sharing!

I just startes crocheting and im so glad i saw this video because I'm totally going to make one! I have a similar color of yarn to your first jumper that i got to knit a sweater a long time ago and i just got discouraged with my pattern and gave up. But i think this would be a fantastic use for it and a great way to continue practicing crochet!

Your video shows me that it's probably time to do my first ever crocheted garment! It really isn't that hard (famous ladt words before even trying it 😅), I just had to get the stitch names right in my head, they are just different enough in my native language to be a bit confusing 😂 But now, with your video as instruction, I finally have a reason to buy that one yarn that i never had a reason to buy before...

I crochet exactly like you so I must do it wrong too lol.

Gorgeous. Love both colourways. How many balls of yarn did it take?
Seems very simple to make. Even for plus sizes. Just add more rows.

You explained the process very well.
Crochet is quicker than knitting, but takes up more yarn too. Tunisian crochet is even more of a yarn hog.

Video saved. I will be making one or two or ....
