How Did Wormtail Stay Transfigured for YEARS? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing how Peter Pettigrew AKA Wormtail—former Marauder and friend, turned traitorous Death Eater—managed to STAY transfigured for as long as he did. Peter Pettigrew, known by those closest to him as Wormtail, attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1970s at the same time as Harry Potter’s father, James. As both Peter and James were in Gryffindor House together, the pair—alongside Sirius Black and Remus Lupin—became inseparable friends. The four housemates even came up with a name for their little gang: The Marauders. And, as you may have guessed or already known, they were, of course, the ones responsible for creating the mischievous and magical Marauder's Map.

For all we know, he didn't. Until he was back at Hogwarts (first with Percy, then with Ron) he only needed to leave the Burrow, and could have turned back into a human for a few hours. He might even have been able to accomplish a few things that people (both Muggles and Witches/Wizards) would have been unable to explain.

Next question on the subject to ask: Why nobody bothered to see why Scabbers (Wormtail) had been alive as long as he had if everyone assumed he was just a plain rat?

I truly believe Dumbledore knew they were animagi and that Peter Pettigrew was the one who truly betrayed the Potters. He allowed Sirius Black to take the fall so he could have total control over Harry's life. He also allowed the Weasleys, first Percy and then Ron to bring their 'pet' rat to school to keep an eye on Peter. Remember, in Harry's school letter it says cat, owl or toad only...not a rat. Yet the Weasleys got to bring a rat. I'm absolutely certain Dumbledore knew.

I like to think that there were times during those 12 years that Peter snuck into the chicken barn, transformed back into a man for a few hours, or at least until Molly came out to get the eggs, just to feel like himself again. And to make sure he still could.

I know you don’t necessarily get to choose what you become but do you eventually start to act and appear more and more like your animagi form? Sirius having a bark like laugh and Peter having rat like characteristics. Do you think you get your form from pre-existing characteristics or do you develop these due to time spent in that form? (Supported by Sirius and Peter arguably acting most like their form due to possibly spending the most time in that form). Is it a mix, in that you get your form from pre-existing characteristics that become emphasised by time spent in that form? Possible video?

My question is, given that rats usually don’t naturally live more than 2-3 years, and that Percy and Ron both had Scabbers for a cumulative time of well over that, how did nobody notice that Scabbers wasn’t really a rat based on his unusual lifespan? I mean, for corn’s sake, Ron actually took him to Magical Menagerie to get him looked at, and that dunderhead store clerk didn’t even bat an eye at Scabbers’s age, acted like it was normal to see a rat that old. He should’ve know that wasn’t a rat when Ron told him how old Scabbers was. Plus, how did Hermione, given that she’s so smart, not figure it out either? Or Hagrid or that matter? I mean, the dude loves animals great and small, how would he not notice the unusually old rat in his presence?

It just doesn’t add up, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley should’ve known something was up, Percy was smart, but didn’t he notice, and there were plenty of other people who were either smart, well versed in animals, or both, who should’ve at least questioned the abnormally old rodent.

How do you screw up this badly? Heck, given that he was raised by Muggles, you would think Harry would’ve noticed something was up. But no, nobody even bothered to ask the simple question of why this rat had an unnaturally long lifespan. NOBODY!!!

Seriously, don’t get a pet without knowing at least how to take care of it and what you will be in for in terms of how long you will have to care for that pet.

Seriously, how did nobody notice?

Why Fred and George have never wondered why the map shows some Peter Pettigrew always been with Ron?

I think there is consequences for staying in animal form for an animagus, because it seemed Peter became more rat like in appearance. Although in the films he already did.

Can't help thinking that Wormtail got the rough end of the deal on the animal-to-turn-into and nickname front.

I actually remember parts of the books where Ron would mention a dream about a man looking over him but i don’t remember which book…

Look I get you are supposed to register yourself but if I was about to be framed for murder I’d give up my friend/former friend and tell people they can transform & that I could to save myself. Say it was a recent thing that we had learned to do so that’s why we hadn’t yet registered. If asked why we learned I’d just say we thought we would try as a challenge then no need to give up the rest of the gang. It might have got people investigating further into things if Sirius had told the ministry Peter could transform?
