Computed Tomography (CT) Medical Definition | Quick Explainer Video
Показать описание
What is Computed Tomography? This video covers the medical definition and provides a brief overview of a CT scan.
➡️ What is Computed Tomography?
Computed Tomography is most commonly referred to as a CT scan. It's an imaging technique in radiology performed by medical professionals to obtain detailed images of the body that can be used for diagnostic purposes. It's a quick, painless, and noninvasive method to generate cross-sectional images that can be analyzed by physicians to get an idea of what's going on with the patient.
➡️ CT Scanner
The actual scanner used in computed tomography uses a rotating x-ray tube that performs measurements from different angles. The data is processed with an algorithm and computer technology to provide us with a "virtual slice" of the human body so that we can get a closer look at bones, soft tissue, blood vessels, and internal organs.
➡️ CT Scan Uses:
- Head – tumor, stroke, hemorrhage.
- Neck – masses, thyroid.
- Breast – lesions, breast cancer.
- Lungs – pleura, mediastinum, lung nodules, masses, parenchyma, and the great vessels of the chest.
- Heart – blood vessels, chambers.
- Abdomen – abdominal pain, Crohn's disease.
- Pelvis – urinary stones.
- Extremities – bone fractures, ligament injuries, dislocations.
- Angiography – arteries, veins.
➡️ CT Advantages
One of the main advantages of using a CT scan over standard x-ray is that it can provide images from any angle and even display three-dimensional views. Computed tomography is very common. In fact, it is estimated that more than 80 million CT scans are performed in the United States each year.
