MOUNTAIN - Mississippi Queen (Live on 'The Show' 02-24-1970) - * RARE * remastered audio

This thundering version of Mississippi Queen, Live in the studio at WITF Pennsylvania, USA shows the band at their peak power. They are sufficiently stimulated for the experience and giving it their all (except the keyboard player, wtf). This version is *much* better than the album version and the live version at NY Pop later in 1970, and is undoubtedly the best version of the song anywhere. This is the Holy Grail of MOUNTAIN relics.

All stoner and doom bands are foam in the wake of MOUNTAIN.

Audio remastered by me to remove some tight-q 500hz and 250hz, soft boost 80-120hz and 5-7k. No added compression.

It sounded worse before, believe me. In all likelihood, this performance was tracked and mixed quick and dirty on TV gear, stored for a decade, duped to VHS, improperly stored for more decades, poorly converted Analog to Digital before a cousin of Leslie's (not verified) uploaded the vid to Facebook where the remaining quality was assassinated. I did my best to remove the honk of the 250hz and cupped mids at 500hz-550-ish, where the keys where resonating loudly and totally dominating the mix. This eq move of mine unfortunately thinned the guitar slightly. It must have been monstrous live. The stringed instruments are both fuzzed by band beating the absolute hell out of the front end of the amps, and also by the peaked inputs of the recording gear, which is why the vocals have gained a perfect amount of velvet distortion. It was mixed *VERY* hot. The kick drum is not present anywhere in the spectrum where it can be made more apparent without messing up the bass tone. I have two decades of experience in commercial studios as a tracking and mixing engineer, but this mastering job was done in ten minutes at home through Logitech headphones and a Bose TV bar speaker. A somehow fitting final insult to the engineering aspect of this this god-like performance by MOUNTAIN.

I hope you enjoy it as much and as often as I do. Please comment below if you would like to discuss any of the following...

- Les Paul Jr.s
- P-90s, especially those late 60s dog-ear output monsters
- Leslie West
- Stacks of Amplifiers that pose multiple fatality risks
- Teenagers that have no idea what they are witnessing
- Bolivian Marching Powder
- Local TV

This is what rock and roll is supposed to sound like.

I kinda liked when singers didn't need to look like movie stars, just needed a good voice and how to play an instrument

Like being hit by a Mack truck. They don't make this stuff anymore.

He's playing rhythm and lead guitar simultaneously and singing, or I should say BELTING, That's some serious talent. Glad I grew up in this era...

The unmistakable sound from an absolute WALL of Sunn amps. I can't imagine how loud this was in the room.

Better than 100 percent of anything played on the radio today; long live rock n roll!

This is one of a handful rock songs in which it is impossible to play it too loud. I'm positive it's blown out tens of thousand of speakers over the years.

This amazing performance was in front of a group of high school students at a public TV station in rural PA that hosted many of the best artists of the time. After each performance the students would meet with the band members and discuss sociopolitical topics with the band members. As you can see, the musicians took this invitation to perform very seriously. Phil Ochs, Country Joe and James Taylor are on YouTube appearing in this "The Show" venue too. Check it out.

Geezer Butler has high praise for this Riff, " one of, if not, the greatest riff of all time". This song always moves me, evokes fond memories from when I was a kid in the '70's

Wow. The drum kit looked like it was from Toys R Us, but jeez he gave them the full treatment . Amazing bass, guitar and such powerful vocals.

No auto tune. No plastic surgery out the wazoo. Just raw talent.

63 years old...so happy to have enjoyed the best music, best cars, and best times that America has ever had to offer. Thanks to my friend Dean for the introduction to Mountain.

I always liked this song but seeing the ‘live’ performance, the cool factor just went through the roof
