Medieval times: Deserts suck. Modern times: Deserts still suck.

Crusader States were barely alive at this point but did offer supplies and aid to the mamluks. It’s like the main character and his rival teaming up to fight an even bigger villian lol

The fake retreat strategy is also how the Lithuanians also defended themselves against mongol and crusader forces. Algirdas famously used it to conquer the golden horde and Vytautas did it in Grunwald

And then the Sultan who led the Muslim forces against the Mongols was assassinated almost Immediatly after by one of his allies.

Didn't the Mongols sack Baghdad and basically the Arab world never really recovered in a lot of aspects?

They were people of steppes originally and hence knew how to use technique of faining retreat.
Later Christians in Europe could easily defeat Mongol armies as their fighting technique was no longer a novelty it ones was.

The Mamluks were not far removed from being nomadic warriors themselves, and so would have been just very familiar with the kinds of tactics the Mongols used.
The Mamluks were Turkic people brought to the Middle East as slaves and mercenaries, and so were basically distant cousins of the Turkic people amongst the Mongol armies.

I love how he talks with so much enthusiasm and confidence it sounds like he was there. And the "Deserts suck" comment doesn't help

Ain Jalut gave the mamluks breathing room and Baibars was able to reconquer Syria and turn it into a massive fortress to hold out against the ilkhanate. Baibars was a commander at ain jalut so he was familiar with the Mongols and how to defeat them.

The third part is that the Mongol Army at Ain Jalut was led by a Mongol, but mainly composed of people who were conquered and pressed into the army, like Georgians, Armenians, and Arabs.

There were a lot more factors that went into stopping the Mongols than a single battle won by an Islamic leader.

How does that equate to saving the world?

I have two suggested episodes for you.

1) Ronenoak - What happened? Did the inhabitants die, move, assimilate, etc.

If they died, why were substantially more graves, bodies not found?

2) Looking at the history of world leading countries- Britain, Greece, Rome, Persia, mongol, etc. What kept these countries from regaining their world leadership/dominance.

I suspect that there is not a common answer or all.

In Europe it was the density of fortifications that stopped them. When you have a fortified castle every couple dozen kilometers, maneuver warfare becomes kind off difficult. And one thing that the Mongols were not good at was siege warfare. which is why they never got much further than Poland and Hungary.

The Dai Viet also stopped the Mongols in the jungle. Jungles suck for logistics too.

Also important to note that many of the Mamluk soldiers had originally been enslaved by the Mongols during their conquest of the Kyiv Rus states, after which they had been purchased to the Venetians who sold them to the Mamluks. These soldiers had an intimate understanding of Mongol tactics having lived through the devastation of their homeland during the 1220s and as such were able to get revenge decades later as adults.

A crap ton of stuff happened in the middle east that I either never learned about, or it wasn't described as the middle east when I was taught.
