Today we're taking the cute little wooden hippo and hitting the road driving north to Tacoma, Washington! I thrifted this cute little hippo for a friend recently at Goodwill and today we are going to shop Kelly's amazing space at the South Tacoma Antique Mall!

The concept for two-way and three-way chairs originated in 19th century France. The two-way chair was known as "le confidant" because it aided discrete conversation. It came to be commonly called a courting chair or a conversation chair. The three-way chair was known as "indiscret" because the third person could eavesdrop on the conversation of the other two. It became commonly called a chaperone chair. It is said that Napoleon purposely placed three-way chairs in the apartments of his ministers in the Louvre to encourage them to eavesdrop on one another.

7:00 Thank you for pointing out how hard people work to keep up their booths. Sometimes people love to complain about high prices, but fail to point out how much work it is. There are many times I bring in pieces and it requires almost a complete overhaul of the space just to fit them in and have the space function properly.

I think the 3-sided chair was for "courting". The prospective bride and groom sat along with her chaperone for their first visits. The design allowed them to talk without getting too "familiar" by looking at each other too much.

I love that Antique mall. It's one of the few malls I feel have decent turnover of product. That one and 3rd Street Antiques in Puyallup are so much fun to just browse. You never know what you'll find in a random pop in, even if it's just a few minutes.
