The Australia Government has drawn domestic political criticism over its decision to abstain from a vote in the United Nations General Assembly calling for Israel to bring to an end without delay its ‘unlawful presence’ in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Member nations overwhelmingly backed the motion, giving a one-year deadline for Israel to leave and calling for reparations to Palestinians for the damage caused.

It is the first to be drafted by ‘Palestine’, now considered by the United Nations as an observer state with extra rights.

In July the International Court of Justice found Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories was ‘unlawful’.

During the vote Australia also reaffirmed to the United Nations it now sees the recognition of Palestinian Statehood as an integral part of the peace process to contribute to a two state solution.
