Nasa, the United States' space agency, has opened applications for a year-long mission to prepare individuals who want to fly to Mars for the severe weather on the Red Planet. According to Nasa, the simulated mission will begin in the fall of 2022. "Calling all Martians! @NASA is recruiting four crew members for a year-long mission that will simulate life in a distant world, living in “Mars Dune Alpha,” a 3D-printed habitat. Want to take part in research for the first human Mars mission?" the space agency said on Twitter. According to Nasa, each mission will have four crew members living and working in a 1,700-square-foot module named Mars Dune Alpha that was 3D-printed by ICON. The habitat would "simulate the obstacles of a journey to Mars, including resource constraints, equipment failure, communication delays, and other environmental stresses," according to the statement. The crew members will undertake spacewalks, conduct scientific research, use virtual reality and robotic controls, and communicate as part of the simulated duties. "NASA will examine how highly driven individuals behave under the rigor of a long-duration, ground-based simulation in preparation for the real-life obstacles of future trips to Mars," according to a press statement on the mission's website. The application is now open for "healthy, motivated non-smokers who are US citizens or permanent residents." The recommended age range is 30-55 years old. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English with both the crew and mission control. A master's degree from an authorized university in a STEM discipline, such as engineering, mathematics, or biological, physical, or computer science, is also desired. A minimum of 1,000 hours of flying experience is also necessary. Nasa added that candidates who have finished two years of study toward a doctorate in STEM, or who have earned a medical degree, or who have completed a test pilot program, would also be considered.
