The Fillmore East. Best live Album ever recorded. First rendition of the band. Dual lead guitars of Duane and Dickey. And Gregg could sing. Critics labeled them "Southern Rock, " but they were so, so much more. Jaimoe and Dickey are still with us...RIP Duane, Gregg, Berry and Butch...The road goes on forever.

Alright, lot of history here, and you asked a lot of questions. The origins of the ABB were pretty much in the Jacksonville/Daytona Beach FL area. Pre ABB, Greg and Duane Allman had both gone to LA to try to make it, and Duane had done extensive studio work in Muscle Shoals AL (Wilson Pickett, King Curtis, Boz Scaggs, etc.). After forming, they settled into the Macon GA area where Capricorn records was in it's infancy, and would become THE record label of southern bands. (ABB, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Cowboy, etc.) The original lineup was Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars, Greg Allman on B3 organ and lead vocals, Berry Oakley on bass, with Butch Trucks and Jaimoe on drums. The two drummer, two guitar sound would become a "trademark" of sorts, and they always featured them in the lineup until they retired in 2014. The albums: The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, Live at Fillmore East, and Eat a Peach, featured the original lineup. Tragically, Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon at the age of 24. Let that sink in a 24 and ripping like that! Ironically, Berry would be killed in a bike accident very close to the site of Duane's crash. Lot of tragedy in the band. They definitely earned their blues pedigree! You seem to be heavily influenced by great guitar work, and you will find none better than the Fillmore East live album and Eat a Peach, which also features some live tracks mixed with studio tracks. You also saw the emergence of Dickey's vocals around this time, with Blue Sky of particular note. Later albums saw more Dickey vocals. I encourage you to keep digging, and if you want more outstanding guitar work from Duane, check out the Derek and the Dominos "Layla" album with Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon. These albums mentioned here are some of the greatest work ever put to vinyl!!

Saw the AB Band in 1973 in Madison Square Garden. They played for 3 hrs. There were 2 standing ovations and they came out both times. So long ago. They will never make music like this again.

That's Duane Allman on guitar. A lost legend, who was taken too early. He died 50 years ago in 1971, unfortunately on my birthday of Oct 29th.
He was only 23 years old, but played with a lifetime of soul behind that slide guitar. And the bass player, Berry Oakley died a year later. Greg Allman led the band, with some break ups and many albums until his passing a few years ago.

This song really features the amazing slide guitar playing of Duane Allman. He was the GOAT of the electric slide.

"Statesboro Blues" is a blues song written by Blind Willie McTell; the title refers to the town of Statesboro, Georgia. McTell made the first recording of the song on October 17, 1928.

McTell borrowed part of the lyrics from a 1923 Sippie Wallace recording of "Up The Country Blues" which was later popularized by Canned Heat as "Goin' Up the Country".

Them are Tennessee boys, born in Nashville but then moved to Florida. They went to school in my mom's hometown of Lebanon TN. They lived much of their adult lives in Georgia. This whole album is killer! One of the best live albums ever recorded! We have it on CD and listen to it frequently on road trips. It's a great melding of southern rock, blues and jazz. Rock In Peace Gregg, Skydog, Berry and Butch

Duane Allman was a session musician in the 60s and played on Boz Skaggs' "Loan Me a Dime." My granddaughter told me this is the best Blues song she has ever heard.

This came off the at Fillmore East album. It is in my opinion and I’ve heard probably every hippie album of the 60s and 70s, the greatest blues rock album ever recorded. And you get it live. I and tens of thousands of other Allman brother fans would probably tell you that when you do the next Allman brothers reaction, you should go straight to this album. On the song you just listened to, take note of the slide guitar by Duane Allman. He took slide guitar to a new level. I would suggest you look into: you don’t love me, In memory of Elizabeth Reed or Whipping post as your next choice.

Duane Allman (slide lead guitar) was a phenomenal talent. I'm nearly 70 and when I stop an think (which is often) I am just gobsmacked by the sheer avalanche of fabulous songs, musicians, singers. etc. we got to enjoy in the wave of popular music between roughly 1960 and 1978 (my opinion). I assert we enjoyed an embarrassment of riches in that arena. I doubt I'll see anything that could compare to such talent again in my lifetime.

Can we agree, we all need a partner who looks at us like Jay looks at Amber with all that love. You guys are so cute together. I love your videos and your family too.

That's the best slide guitar you'll ever hear. Duane has it screaming like no one else. He used a glass pill bottle on his ring finger. He invented some of those licks, like at the 7:15 mark. DIcky Betts is no slouch either. What a great guitar tandem.

I doubt there was ever a better slide guitar player than Duane Allman. Died so young in a motorcycle accident.

Ahhh the Allman Bros. Band.
They were from Florida. The Daytona, Jacksonville areas.
It is hard to believe the number of incredible, world class guitar players this band had.
Here it's Dicky Betts and Duane Allman (on slide).
Dicky's problem was being a top 25 Rock guitarist in a band with a top 5 Rock guitarist.
He wrote most of the great songs too.
See:
"In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed"
"Dreams"
"Jessica"
"Blue Sky" A personal favorite of mine. A Desert Island song

When Duane passed, RIP "Sky Dog", they went through a Who's Who of southern Rock guitar players.
Dan Toler
Warren Haynes a top ten player was with them until the end
Jack Pearson another legend
Jimmy Herring for a short period
Derek Trucks. Who is possibly the best guitar player of his generation.

See also Government Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Duane Allman plays the Slide Guitar solo you liked so much. Dickie Betts played the second solo. Berry Oakley on bass, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe on drums and on keys and vocals, Gregg Allman...

I am originally from Macon, GA and the Allman Brothers are a huge part of my musical DNA. When I was 6 or 7, I remember asking my Mom to drive by the "hippie house" (The Big House where they lived). When Cher married Greg and showed up in Macon at the country club with Elijah Blue on her hip and Chastity in tow, we were in awe. My Dad was very good friends with Willie Perkins (their tour manager back in the day with the stories). My Dad recently died on 11/9/2021. and Willie sent me a very sweet note about my Dad. Like I said...musical DNA.

And you must react to Whipping Post Live At the Fillmore East - the live video. A classic. Greg was only 21 and Duane was 23 (I think). The story is that Greg woke up in the middle of the night with the idea of Whipping Post and found a piece of paper, a pen and used the ironing board as his desk.

For me, Best Southern Rock and Blues. Gregg's singing is God given. RIP. What Joy to see you guys 40 years later digging our music from the 70's, etc. Stank are jamming! They got their dues touring 50 years ago. My first concert in my home town of Boston, I was 15 or 16.

The Allman Brothers are the heart of Southern Rock. It's rock, blues, and gospel melded together. Do "Ramblin' Man". The Allman Brothers are from Macon Georgia baby!
