Masterful character development in this story. We see the insecurities of both Sonic and Knuckles, as Sonic flirts with the sister as an escape from his existential internal dialogue, a dialogue which culminates in his unfortunate suicide. Knuckles fights his inner sense of inferiority with a mask of defensive aggression, starved of true brotherhood. In the final shot of this masterpiece, Knuckles' true character is revealed under the facade. He stares into the abyss with shocked sadness, and the very same existential dread that once tormented his only friend resides in him anew.
