Welcome to the Regional Unit of Imathia!
A place that remains etched on the mind and heart of every visitor with the unique images, unique flavors and experiences.
The Regional Unit of Imathia is an important focus of attention for Christianity. Veria is one the towns where Saint Paul preached the word of God. In Veria, Saint Paul’s Altar is the most important monument in the ecclesiastical history of the town. It is the place where the Apostle of the Nations proclaimed the new religion of Christianity before the remarkable Jewish community of the city.
Forty-eight Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches with magnificent frescoes and icons from the 12th to 18th century have been standing in Imathia for over a millennium and signify the prosperity of the town of Veria and the region. In the Byzantine Museum you can admire the unique finds of
the Byzantine period.
Just outside Veria, the Holy Monastery of Panagia Soumela, perched on the green slopes of Mt Vermio, is the spiritual center of Pontian Hellenism. The miraculous icon of Panagia Soumela that is kept in the Monastery was engraved on the wood by Luke the Evangelist, according to tradition.
On August the 15th every year, thousands of pilgrims from Greece and abroad arrive to worship the Virgin Mary.
The Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos above the Aliakmonas river, in Pieria mountains, is associated with great forms of monasticism. Several more Temples and Holy Monasteries in Imathia are worth visiting, including the Old Cathedral and Saint Vlasios church in the town of Veria, the small Church of Prodromos in Naoussa, the Holy Monasteries of Panagia Dovra, Saint Georgios Peristereotas, Saints Anargyroi in Nisi n Nisi, and the Virgin Kallipetra, near the village of Rachi, with a wonderful view to the straits of the Aliakmonas river.
