Why The Greenland Shark Often Goes Blind And Survives

The Greenland shark is often found with a parasite called ommatokoita attached to their eyes. These parasites cause vision loss and even blindness in Greenland sharks. Despite this, Greenland sharks are estimated to live over 500 years, even with the vision loss. It is theorized that ommatokoita may be bio-luminescent and actually attract prey for the Greenland shark. However, this is not yet proven and there is little footage of Greenland sharks but what footage we do have is very good because they are docile in the presence of humans.
