Fun fact: The King of Hearts playing card is often called the "suicide king" because it looks like he's poking a dagger into the back of his head, but in the original design of the 52 card deck, he was actually shown doing this stance.

As the facecard designs simplified from portraits to their current abstract design, it went from a sword/battle-axe held behind the back, to a dagger behind the head.

It also protects you by threatening your enemy. If you know your opponent is prepared to do a big cut like that, you're probably not going to go within their range.

This is also an extremely good defense, not through physicality, but through a kind of psychological warfare. If you see someone wound back like that, knowing that they're primed to strike, and that the entire point of this guard is to land quick and *hard*, you're gonna be reluctant to attack or expose yourself.

The best guard is the one that prevents your opponent from even attempting to attack.

Also has the default passive protection of keeping your blade away from you opponent's weapon. They cannot beat or otherwise do anything to control your weapon in this state.
