The dreaded moonballer has a house full of trophies because everyone hates to play them. It can be very frustrating trying to hit balls up around your earlobes.

One of my subscribers recently asked me, ‘how do you play those balls’?

In today’s video, Stephanie and I give you 4 different options against the moonball.

Option #1 – Take the ball before the bounce you’re taking time away from your opponent by moving forward and being aggressive. This works very well against the moonball.

Option #2 – Take the ball on the rise. This again takes time away from your opponent because you’re taking the ball earlier giving your opponent less time to get ready for your return.

Option #3 – Turn and skip back and let the ball drop into a comfortable hitting zone. This is probably the safest option but, make sure when you hit back aim high and hit it hard otherwise your shot may land short giving your opponent offensive options.

Option #4 – Slice the high one back. This one is really a last resort but the bottom line is get it back and make your opponent hit another ball to beat you.

So, options 1 and 2 should be shots you’ll want to develop to be successful against the moonballer. However, there’s nothing wrong with using options 3 and 4 when you need to.

All the best, to your success against the moonball,
Tom

Thank you. I lost to an opposite who played hight lobbing ball deep in the court. I was trying to apply option #3 but he just was better than me.

Tennis pro Sara Sorribes Tormo is someone who uses a lot a lot of heavy topspin moonballs to wear down her opponents. She will stay out there all day to win the point. These are good tactics to use when playing an opponent who is employing this strategy against you.

Option #5: Moonball back. That’s my favorite, haha

Great tips ! Which of the 4 is preferable? And how to decide which one to use when in matchplay? Thanks for this excellent comprehensive video.

I had a tennis teacher tell me to do an aggressive volley-type shot on high balls to the forehand side. Do you think that is an option?

Thanks Tom, I often play mixed double. The female opponent always use moon balls, and her partner standing near the net shall do a smash, if the returned ball is slow or not deep enough. Which option is the best option to handle this scenario? Playing with moon ball pusher is not funny at all. Thank you.

Though you are showing four options against moon balls, weaker and slow returns must be victims by the opponents with their volley or smashing. In that aspect, I can see that only the swing volley and hitting rising balls are useful ways among the four options. However, it's also not so easy to get sharp and consistent returns to moon ballers.

Hmm. A bit risky to smash off of a really high and deep moonball? Easy to miss. Especially if there is sun and wind! Swing volley is safer?

I think the best option is number 1. I hate moonballers!!
