The Cult of Social Media

Some influence is healthy and promotes our ability to grow, whilst other influences can instill dependency or promote harm to ourselves and others. With the emergence of the digital era, it seems the lines between what we have control over and what has control over us has become blurred.

How can we become aware of undue influence and gain sovereignty over our minds? To what degree is influence used as a form of control and what are the similarities between social media and cults?

Join Tristan Harris and Dr. Steven Hassan as they break down classic cult tactics and how those techniques have evolved in the digital age.

I am new to your channel, and hearing a literate discussion on the programming of the mind resonates so much with the thought's that have passed through my mind over the years. Something that has really been bothering me is the rise of content describing the entire host of mental and psychological disorders, usually starting with something like ... if you're feeling ...

The rise of the 'label' is something i see affecting so many people, who are now allowing social media to influence their emotional and psychological states. They self diagnose themselves with depression/ PTSD/ victim's of Narcissistic family members / BPD. The entire psychiatric family of diagnosis is being used to enable people into a type of helplessness and victimhood. Particularly in the youth and young adult group which is where i am peripherally employed. Im sure content creators might consider they have the best of intentions, but they are influencing the rise of labels that in the past, would have been considered part of the human condition. It troubles me no end.

That's a very good observation about meaningful coincidences. When I was a fundamentalist Christian as a kid, I always thought of them as answers to prayers for guidance.

I still think they are a form of guidance. But synchronicity happens to everyone who seeks meaning in events. They are not a confirmation that our beliefs about what is happening are correct! Not at all. But in terms of unfolding adventure, I enjoy the mystery of meaningful coincidence, the apparent significance of synchronicity. It can be as simple as, there is something here to understand; not that it is true or false.
