After our last video about Video Distribution and TV Control, we received a number of question about controlling TVs.

⚡️FREE PREWIRE GUIDE:

⚡️Custom Smart Home Design:

There are 3 methods for controlling your TV. IR, RS232, and IP. In this video we take a real simple overview of all three, discuss the importance of 2-way feedback, and why we prefer RS232 and IP for TV and Video Control.

What's important to understand, is that even if you don't have Video Distribution, you can still control all your TVs inside of a Smart Home. but the method of control you use will largely determine the user experience.

Now admittedly this is a really basic explanation. It's not technical at all. But I found a couple videos that do a really good job of explaining the tech if you're interested. Here are the links:

Great Video, someone commented on using Logitech universal remotes. Although they do work most of the time they are not foolproof. If the state of the TV changes it will go out of sync and you would have to resync the remote and try again. That is why I replaced my Logitech remote in the HT with a control4 EA1 system. As long a IP is set as a static addresses I have not have any issue in several months.

Good Luck.

I have three Samsung digital signage displays(monitors) and I have no remote. I have RS232c ports and PC/laptops BUT I don't know how to control them using what I have. Is there any software people can recommend for controlling the displays?

Granted, IR doesn't offer two-way control like RS-232 and IP, but IR can work well IF the device supports discrete ON and OFF control commands. Your discussion, I think, glosses over this and gives the impression that all IR devices only support the toggle ON/OFF command and therefore are incapable of discrete ON and OFF commands. While this is true with some devices (usually very inexpensive ones), it's not true for most mid-tier and above devices. I know this video is not intended to be a master course in device control, and some details need to be abbreviated for time/clarity reasons.

Hello Tym great informative video concise and informative. Only question it left me with is, What do you use to control your TV through IP? i.e. are there software programs for your computer or??? Which I guess makes me think of another question but I'm sure it has to be a yes but does that mean I can control my TV from anywhere online? Thanks!

Love your videos! Currently working with an Integrator in Dallas, TX for a Theater, Family Room, and Master Bedroom setup including Savant. My requirement has been that all devices are IP controllable. I already have two Samsung TV’s which we have confirmed are IP controllable. We’ve also selected AVR’s and a Projector which has been confirmed. Do you know if there is a list of devices published that are IP controllable with Savant? Or can you confirm if an AppleTV would be? Also, any recommendations for BluRay players and TV service that has IP controllable boxes (I believe my local options are Comcast, U-verse, or DirecTV)? Thanks!

If I want to pre-wire for RS232 control, what kind of wire should I run (just an RS232 cable or is there some other cable that can be run and an adapter placed on the end). Also, is there a list or easy way to search for TVs that support RS232 or IP control?
