A song written by the wife of Sam Reece, a union organizer for the United Mine Workers who had been fighting a war in southeastern Kentucky called the Harlan County War, as it was in Harlan County. Sheriff J. H. Blair illegally entered Sam's house one night looking for him, but he was already warned to escape. His wife and kids were there though, so they terrorized them instead. After which Sam's wife wrote the song on a calendar.

Just so we are clear, when the poster says "terrorized" his wife and children; that is the nice-old-fashioned way of saying the police beat his wife and children.
