This information is incorrect. If a patient has paresis or weakness in an extremity, you do not automatically assign a 1 for ataxia in that limb. The ataxia must be present to a degree greater than the weakness in the extremity.

The best demonstration of limb ataxia so far. Thank you 🙏🏼

What the heck??? This is SO wrong. So frustrating to try and find accurate information on Ataxia. It’s CLEAR that if the pt is paralyzed or weak you don’t count that as ataxia!!!

This video is incorrect. The finger-nose-finger and heel-shin tests are performed on both sides, and ataxia is scored only if present out of proportion to weakness. If the person was able to hold their arm up and had good strength, but was uncoordinated with their movement then they would be scored points for ataxia. Please don't score ataxia points for limbs that are expressing weakness or paralysis.

Thank you for the video, trying to do my NIH stroke scale certification and now I understand the ataxia section.

Ataxia is ONLY scored when present. You have presented this information 100% incorrectly

You can’t score ataxia on limbs with paresis

Take this video down. It isn’t correct!

Atacia video is NOT correct. Only gets a 1 if she is disproportionate to weakness

This is incorrect and should be removed. It is evident that pt doesn’t have use of extremity. This is scored as zero per NIHSS.
