The European Parliament has passed a landmark law, banning the importation of products linked to deforestation.

Companies importing commodities like coffee, soy, and palm oil, will now be required to carry out due diligence on their origins or risk substantial fines.

This is a fantastic decision. We need more steps like this to protect our forests.

We should be doing the exact same thing here in Great Britain. I really do hope that is the plan for us to follow the same rule by copying it over.

That's positive but again creates issues for the UK as part of that proposed trade deal includes palm oil x. So if any UK product uses this then it could cause issues with exports. However I welcome this from the EU.

Sucks to be Brazil. Should have also banned the World Cup.

I haven't seen the detail but on the face if it this sounds like a terrible idea. Are the EU really going to ask poor coffee growers in Africa and Brazil to comply with additional bureacracy and bear those costs when the EU's CO2 emissions per capital are much lower than thise in the EU. I think that the EU shouldn't be imposing rules like this on other, poorer, countries until they have reduced their per capita emissions so that they match those in other coutries. For example, how would Germany feel if the USA banned all products associated with the burning of lignite coal (the most polluting type of coal) that is widely used in Germany.

Then the olive oil from Spain should also be banned.

How will the EU make their precious EV batteries and batteries essential for renewable energy?

The EU hasn’t thought this through.
