I think the technical term is "looking busy."

If you walk around the job site with a serious look on your face and don’t make eye contact nobody asks any questions 😂 works 60% of the time, all the time

1. Grab the biggest tool in the shop (not the Safety Man).
2. Walk around jobsite quickly, acting like you have a purpose.
3. Look pissed off/worried/scared/all of the above.
4. ???
5. Profit!

Group of us were sitting on the work bus at the end of the day watching some other guys tie up the last bit of track(rail projects, we were the hammer swingers all day...the other guys were moving the vehicles) we were in there laughing our asses off after we noticed one particularly skilled individual move tools back and forwards from the trucks and never actually doing anything. Like the tools he brought over sat there unused while he brought another over, then picked up the unused tool and put it back on the truck again only to repeat the process multiple times.

Also had a situation where we were doing some thermite welds in an area with limited vehicle access and needed a spanner to undo some bolts, we had noticed previously they had a guy come through every day checking the bolts are still tight so when he came through we hit him up to use his spanner rather than walk all the way back to the truck. He said no we couldn't use it...we're like dude its a 2 second job, again he said no but now looking rather sheepish. At this point he could tell we were a little pissed and explained how it was a long walk and he barely had to tighten any bolts since most were good (just had to give them a kick to check) so he made himself a balsa wood spanner and painted it chrome then walked every day with almost no weight, if he came across any loose ones he'd bring the real spanner the next day...but today...today was balsa wood day.

A safety vest, and a clipboard with random paperwork on it works too. Just act like you are checking things off on the board as you go.

Probably the best lesson I was ever taught in college. "Walk fast and look pissed off. Turn around and go back the other way."

It's always great seeing Ricky teaching the new guy valuable life lessons.

Us desk workers have our own version of the "walkabout". We keep several important looking projects up on the computer just behind the Youtube tab, and the mouse hovering over "minimize".
When bossman walks in, ya gotta look busy, frustrated, or both.

I once spent two weeks walking around the parking lot with a broom and dustpan. Not once did anyone question me or ask me to do something else.

This is a necessity, it doesn't matter if you are busy, just LOOK busy and management will leave you be.

You have to make sure you have some sort of blueprint in hand as well doesn't matter what to, the jobsite, electrical, engine, a boat, hell even something your kids drew for you. Make sure it all crinkled up with " Needs replaced ASAP" in red marker. Has to be semi visible to others.
