Taking a short break from playing is actually a great idea. I've found that if I don't pick up my axe for a few days, I come back with more creativity... I think playing every single day can get you caught in one place, and your creativity starts to "tarnish"... Stay away for 2-3 days, and come back playing in a different area from where you left off.

i just try to practice songs with different techniques in them. playing a lot of van halen has really improved my pull offs and tapping for example. its fun :)

I will also add that *some* practice is better than no practice. So if you’re able to, try to play as often as you can, even (and especially) while multitasking.

When I was in highschool, I would watch a couple of shows right after I got home to unwind, and I’d have a guitar in my lap the whole time. While watching tv or whatever, just noodling around and playing can be a great way keep up a minimum maintenance.

I would also use that time to do some basic ear training, and I didn’t even realize it at the time! I would try to match the notes of the repetitive commercial jingles or recurring show themes, and just sorta try to figure out how to play stuff by ear while killing time.

We’ve all seen those commercials or ads that pop up over and over again, or hear those jingles that are just ingrained in our heads. If a Farmer’s Insurance or State Farm commercial is always popping up and getting stuck in your head, try to play the notes by memory, and when the commercial rolls around again, see how close you are while playing against it.

You’re not doing deep theory dives or anything super draining or precise. You’re gamifying it, while also keeping yourself honest about pitch and memorization. Maybe that Farmers jingle only happens twice a day, and you “learned” how to play it a couple days ago. Now you gotta remember it on the fly when JK Simmons’ face pops up, and see how your memory in your head lines up to the actual sound coming towards you.

I have absolutely zero theory background, but I can learn most anything by ear, and have a pretty good ear for pitch. Even if I have to brute force it sometimes, that’s one of those skills that doesn’t really get talked about much, and has REALLY impractical ways of practicing it thrown out there on the internet.

Fuck interval training day in and day out. That’ll get you there, and maybe even faster, but for MOST students of guitar, unless you really want a jazz/classical theory background, you don’t need to deep dive theory, and it won’t help your actual physical playing.

What WILL help is learning how to make the sounds and notes you’re wanting to play, and how to match pitches effectively.

Most budding guitarists want to learn their favorite songs, or that cool riff or whatever. A lot of us are disillusioned by terrible TABs that are plastered everywhere and are all horribly inaccurate, and even the ones that ARE accurate do have a learning curve that isn’t always accessible or empowering for younger players.

But if you can develop a skill to quickly or efficiently string together the right notes, or even just to get you in the right ballpark, you’re giving yourself the skills to both learn those songs yourself, and/or to supplement those crummy tabs and walkthroughs you find online, so that you can identify what doesn’t sound right, and get the right notes in there.

I used to just sit in front of my tv or computer and just play songs I knew, or write little riffs, and just build up everything;
Hand strength & dexterity, picking skills, the aforementioned ear-training, playing the right notes without looking at the guitar, hell, even maintaining your calluses! You can do a LOT by keeping your guitar in your hands.

Ngl, before smartphones were a thing, 14 year old me would even take a guitar into the bathroom sometimes🤦🏻‍♂️ lol

Just utilize the time you can whenever you can!!

I think quantity is good for making things such as scales and techniques second nature which entails as you said quality in auditing your mistakes. So, high quantity practicing with a high quality is excellent for making techniques subconscious/second nature which helps contribute to the bigger picture of making songs and especially improvisation.

sometimes I'm on multiple month sprees of playing 3 hours a day. Sometimes I practice less. But I always spend some time on guitar each day. It's my life now

What you practice is what you cement in your abilities, good or bad.

Honestly doing anything is better than nothing. Playing something before bed or when you're procrastinating something is better than not playing at all.

You need to learn your personal line of diminishing returns. Once things stop sticking or start getting confusing, take a break. And make sure the technique you are learning is branded in your brain before you start killing your motivation with things that are a little to difficult.

As much as you want. Literally. If you want to play for hrs and hrs every day, you will benefit from every moment. If you want to play an hr every week, you will benefit from every moment. If don't want to play, if you don't like playing, then no amount of practice will make you great. The passion is what builds greatness.

I been playing songs I normally don’t listen too. Outside of the Metal stuff. Playing several different styles will make u better quick. Don’t get caught up in all the scales and learn the chords.

I have this problem where I start practicing and it slowly turns into me just jamming 😅. I just play for fun so I don't take it to seriously.

I do about 30 minutes at a time but sometimes more than once a day but then there's some days I go 2 to 3 days without picking it up. Like you said it all depends on your schedule and free time.
