The climactic "Melting Man" scene in ROBOCOP (1987) with Emil (Paul McCrane) melting after being soaked in toxic waste was heavily objected to by the MPAA and they demanded to have it removed. However, they eventually backed down when they found out that in most test screenings, the scene elicited the most positive reaction from the test audience such that it was eventually passed without any cuts. The film was submitted to the MPAA 12 times before securing an R rating.

This scene scarred me. It was my first exposure to the concept of acids and corrosion. I remember it vividly.

This scene was a PSA, it taught me to never mess around with toxic waste. 😂

Man, i can imagine people when test screening this particular scene are cheering and applaud to this magnificent scene. Man, people in 80s are the best breed 🎉

crazy how far movies have come in almost 40 years this scene by modern standards is very tame but it was traumatic to viewers back then

One of the most horrific deaths I’ve ever seen, and I watch all the horror movies.

Imagine the pain of your skin and muscles just sloughing off of you

That scene was definitely disturbing, but I’m glad it didn’t get removed

That scene legit gave me nightmares. But it taught me a valuable lesson in messing with caustic chemicals way faster than Bill Nye could.

I like how the sign on the tank just says “Toxic Waste”. That itself is so funny. I was traumatized by this when I was young, but now I find it so hilarious and iconic. Especially when the car hits him. The editing of that is fantastic. And the splatter over the windshield. It’s just so fantastic timing on the Toxic Waste guy when he goes on the street and gets hit by the car and show it from the inside as if he really hit him. Paul Veerhoven is just the master of unusual comedy.

That was such a perfect end to that character. He deserved nothing less than absolute torture for a death

That's amazing that they would want that cut out because 10 years prior to this release, there was a movie released called "The Incredible Melting Man" who looked just like that at the end.

What’s funny is with all of the “they couldn’t make this today” videos out there, the idea has existed for well over 30 years. You can do more today without meaningful objection than you ever could before.
