Most sailors would soak it in their soups or grog to soften it.. I don’t know if this is completely true, but I’ve heard some sailors would put them in their pocket and throughout the day their sweat would soften it so they could eat it

Well, usually, you mix it into soup or some kind of liquidy food, or you can do what i do and naw on it like a dog on a bone until i slowly eat it.
