Did you notice this in COCO? At the beginning of the movie Miguel says shoes brought the family together. Throughout the movie Hector is barefoot and has a tense relationship with…well, just about everyone he meets. But later when he crosses the bridge with Mamá Imelda, be sure to look at his feet one more time.

Just watched Coco for the first time tonight. I wasn’t prepared for that ending. I’m a 52 year old dude and I cried like a little baby lol.

Don’t they literally have a shot of him wearing shoes at the end of the movie to show he’s been accepted into the family again?

The reason he has no shoes is because shoes is what symbolizes his family and he was basically kicked out of the family which I guess meant he wasn’t allowed to have what represented the family idk lol

OK I’ll be looking at his feet the entire time I’m watching the movie

It’s not because of the shoes.
It’s more about the fact that Hector was broke and was nearly forgotten.
He had a tense relationship with the family due to the misunderstanding and generational trauma. This has nothing to do with him wearing shoes or not.

When Hector met Mama Imelda during the movie, after Imelda sang on the stage (accidentally) she grabs the picture from Ernesto De La Cruz and stomps on his foot and runs and jumps into Hector’s arms when he was putting away the guitar laughing.
Imelda: (smiles) I forgot what it felt like.
Hector: You still got it. (Smiles back)
Also, Imelda called Hector the love of her life. It is obvious that she still cares for Hector although she is mad at him.

There has been subtle throughout the movie that shows them slowly reconciling. At the end of the movie during the “One Year Later” part, we see Hector wearing shoes because Hector has already fully reconciled with the family (especially Imelda) and most likely learned to make shoes as it was their family tradition.

Therefore, I don’t find this isn’t very shocking.

I did notice that wondering if they're still providing shoes in the afterlife for everyone as well

Not only that. But his clothes were also torn and tattered before he crossed the bridge.

I thought him bring barefoot was signifying that he was a forgotten urchin

It is a symbolism that when everything was misunderstood Hector does not have any shoes. When all was revealed and patched up he had the shoes to show that all was fixed and complete.

Have never watch Coco until recently this month and I don't regret it. I loved every single one of the songs in the movie, especially Proud Corazón.
