I took my daughter to Greece last summer for her Sweet 16 birthday, in order to meet her relatives, cousins, etc. It was her first time there. In Athens, we took a cab for a 2 mile short trip and the cabbie ended up giving us a free tour (didn't charge us for that part) of Athens, all because I told him that I brought my daughter to Greece in order for her to trace her roots and heritage, and to see where her grandparents are from. I guess the cabbie was so impressed with my story, he said he was proud to have us in his car, and that wanted to take us on a tour. I got all misty eyed at his kindness, and tipped him well anyway.

Riding a greek taxi is like going to the university. With 5 rides you get a diploma. During this period of pandemic you get a diploma in medicine and pharmaceutical schools

man this is so true, as an italian i’ve also noted that 99% of greek taxi drivers have either lived some years somewhere in italy or have some close parents currently living in italy 🤣 you can’t imagine how much i love and admire greek approach to life.

My special favourite taxi driver called Nikos! When I had to go in hospital he was bringing me inside and waiting with me for the doctor, helped me with the language and drove me back like a closed friend... now he is my friend of course!

Many years ago, in the '80s, I begged a taxi driver to take me to central Athens from Vouliagmeni. He categorically refused. His wife, he said, was expecting him for lunch and he didn't want to be late. But, he said magnanimously, "My friend, I'll do you a favour. I'll take you to Glyfada. You can get a taxi to Athens from there." On the way to Glyfada, a very pretty young lady, all dolled up, hailed the cab. Driver to me: "should I pick her up?" Me: "up to you." Driver to the young lady: "where are you headed?" Young lady to driver: "central Athens." Driver: "What a coincidence... that's exactly where WE were going!" They don't make cab drivers like that anymore. They'll still talk your head off and expound with assurance on any topic. They're still omniscient in their own minds! But they've been tamed. They no longer decide where you're going.

Got into a cab in Greece, then told him were I was going after I got in. Didn't want to go, I refused to get out, he was threatening all types of shit. He realised pretty quickly he wasn't going to get me out of his cab and ended up taking me were I wanted to go.
