He was hunting. He heard his prey underneath the snow and was calculating exactly how high he would need to jump, to penetrate to the exact depth his prey was sitting. He is listening to it breathing.

It wasn't just looking at the snow... It was listening. By tilting its head side to side, it was trying to get an accurate bead on its prey under the snow. That dive into the snow was an attempt to catch whatever was moving around underneath.

He's LISTENING to the little sounds a mouse or mole makes under the snow. He 's not diving for "no reason" -- he's diving to catch the mouse or mole he hears.

The back and forth of his head/ears is to triangulate the sounds its hearing of the prey under the snow. Jumping up and into the snow is its attempt to pounce on the prey. University of Nat Geo here!

They've great ears that can detect motion beneath the snow and gives it's snoot coordinates to aim for.
