Perestroika or restructuring was a reform that needed funding and aid from the US, but the money didn’t pour in on time and the coup against Gorbachev was in motion. Glasnost or loudness failed because it showed the failures and incompetence during the Brezhnev era. Gorbachev was an idealist with good intentions, but clearly had no idea how things get done in the dictatorship set up by previous premiers. Top that with the hardliners who staged a coup and a Yeltsin who betrayed you and signed a deal to get Ukraine and other countries’ independence
