✅ S1
Closure of atrioventricular valves: Mitral (left) & tricuspid valve (right) closure + the vibrations they produce along the heart = the first heart sound. This happens at the systolic contraction of the ventricles. As the ventricles try to push blood out of the heart, the valves in between the atria and ventricle need to close in order to prevent blood to flow back into the atria.
✅ S2
Caused by the closing of the semilunar valves: Pulmonary valve & Aortic valve.
This is heard once the systolic contraction is complete. This occurs to prevent blood flowing back from the pulmonary artery or aorta into the ventricles.
We will discuss the heart sounds S3 and S4 in a separate post, reserved especially for when we discuss abnormalities and murmurs.
