When I was young in the early seventies I used to read Progressive Farmer magazines and would dream of what it would be like to drive one of the old Versatile or Steiger tractors. Finally got my chance when I was 17 I went to work for at the time was a BTO who had 8630 Deere tractors. I am 63 now and never got the chance to drive one till a couple years ago I found a big old tired 875 Versatile at auction and started it up and drove it around the yard. Not much on luxury but all engine trans and final drives. Those tractors were made to work and not much more. No electronics or computers and you could work on them with a handful of wrenches. Just good solid dependable iron...

Owned an 876 identical to this one, cab was quiet. We could come across a washout on a hillside and you would need to slow down to cross it, leave the implement in the ground and just throttle the engine way back and creep through the washout then back to full throttle. Never lost power, really nice. Very reliable. Loved that high view from the cab

My father-in-law farmed many years with a Versatile 935….absolutely bulletproof tractor with horsepower for days. Loud as sin in the cab but solid as can be with no significant trouble in all the years he had it.

Love the sound of that 855 Cummins!
We had a 145, an 800, and later, two 850 Versatiles and an 1150.
They were solid, reliable workhorses, no question.
At the time, if you were really ‘flush with cash’, you ran Steiger.
In later years, as more HP and the desire for a more refined platform presented itself, our farm switched to JD 8850s and beyond.
Many good memories running those 850 Versatiles, though.

I NEVER DROVE A Versatile tractor 🚜 the way I see it that disk and packer outstanding performance.

Own an 876 ‘85 model, use ours for vertical tillage and seeding. It’s hardest work is pulling a 24 foot wide tandem breaking disc with 22 inch discs. Otherwise it’s mainly attached to a frigstaad 36 foot cultivator with a valmar granular applicator and air drill hoses with a flexicoil 1720 tow behind air cart. We use an older 835 versatile for tugging our cultivators and packer harrows as it works better on harder work than our lighter 876 lol. We don’t get dry brown dirt up here so it’s hard pulls and mud most of the time.

had one on the farms in michigan, good tractors never went wrong in all the years we had it, bought it in 1960 got rid in 2000
