What I never see in these stories is prop matching. Selecting a propeller pitch for each motor that (given differences in gearbox ratio) will give similar theoretical top speed for each motor. Any outboard will struggle if the prop is over pitched, and Yammy’s tend to be.

I've been a Yamaha tech for 11 years, and i own a 60hp e-tec that i got really cheap through my job. I've seen problems on it that i've never seen on a Yamaha. Once, the engine started tilting out of the water while we were driving. (defective tilt switch on the cowling) and i had to reach down there to unplug it while drifting towards a reef. another day, the engine got stuck at around 1500rpm in rough water because the neutral switch was defective, and we started taking on water. then the lower unit filled up with seawater in a year because every single seal was leaking (the lower unit is unchanged from the 70's johnsons!). I've replaced an injector and my starter motor is going out. It's an unreliable piece of crap, and i can't wait until it dies so i can change it out. Also, because it is a two stroke, it is extremely weak until you get on plane. It does not like being below 3000rpm. at 2000rpm, doing 5, 5knots, it smokes and smells like cancer if the wind is blowing from the rear. I do not like the thought of breathing in several litres of two stroke oil every year.
