How to Create a Personal Access Token in GitHub

Creating a personal access token in GitHub should be easy, since the PATs are used everywhere. However, it is sometimes challenging.

In this video, I'm showing how to create a personal access token in GitHub and we will also briefly talk about what is a personal access token.

Personal access tokens (PATs) are an alternative to using passwords for authentication to GitHub when using the GitHub API or the command line.

Since it has been about 3 years since I had to setup Git on my work computer, I can not remember what I did to generate my PAT. I believe it was the older Git Credential Manager that came with Git for Windows. Do you remember how the PATs that you have that start with "git: https://" were created? I want to create SOPs for new developers and I have a similar token in my list. I like how they show the computer name and when it was created in the name of the PAT but can't seem to figure out how those get auto generated. I also noticed that when trying to use a Sandbox environment to test with that a .git-credentials file is not being generated but I have one on my computer. Is that an old thing that they don't create anymore?

@coderdave this is great but is it impossible to create a PAT for an organization? The option is clear as day in the personal accounts but no where to be found in organization settings, neither no explanation on this on the internet. Is a PAT in organization simply not possible?

I am on the verge of giving up on using repositories. I generated my PAT and I don't know what to do with it. Git's customer service rep told me I had to use the PAT as my password. I changed my password to my PAT and that hasn't worked. I saw your enable SSO slide button on your video, but nothing like that is showing up for me on my window.

What do I do? I'm totally confused and frustrated over this.
