It may be possible that Russia waited to not only destroy the S300 but also the soldiers who would have used the equipment. Training soldiers takes time and eliminating them makes the delivery of military equipment useless because without trained personnel any military equipment can not be used efficiently. Especially for complicated systems such as the S300.

To be honest, I thought the S300 would be destroyed a few hundred metres into Ukraine. But It's also a waste of resources, to have it arrive in the east of Ukraine. Only to be destroyed at a whim. Somebody in the Kremlin was having a good laugh.
