Einstein's biggest blunder helped scientists model the Universe. Yes, even when wrong, Einstein was right! In 1915 Einstein published his field equations which relate the motion of mass and energy to the curvature of spacetime. It was a revolutionary departure from Newtonian gravity. General relativity was successful in solving problems that Newtonian gravity could not, like the precession of Mercury. But when Einstein tried to use his equations to explain Universe as a whole he faced a problem.
He thought the universe was static. So, in order to make the equation consistent he added a term called cosmological constant. In the later years, Alexander Friedmann corrected Einstein by providing non-static solution of the equations. Edwin Hubble's discovery proved that the universe was expanding and Georges Lemaitre proposed the idea of Big bang. In the later years cosmic microwave background provided support in their theory. But there is an unknown force which is accelerating the expansion. This is known as dark energy. Ironically, scientists have reintroduced Einstein's constant to explain dark energy.
