I think this is a great point! GP opinion doesn't necessarily determine whether a group is "flopping" especially when they're a more senior group ^^

People don’t understand just how difficult it is for a gg to build such a strong fan base as Twice’s. Like yeah they might not be the new shiny thing anymore but they’ve established themselves and are already legends so it’s still huge

there’s been a lot of discussion about how TWICE has lost the interest of the general public lately. imo yes… BUT i also think there’s a second factor in explaining this drop — JYPE is simply no longer aiming for korean general public (GP) success for TWICE, instead focusing on fandom + overseas revenue

why do i think this? i think their latest comeback is a clear example of this. the QR code, “random” dates in their concept photos, and even the plushie pc’s are all fandom references, things that would completely fly over the head of a casual TWICE listener. it may not have charted as high either, but sales were better than ever — casual listeners are unlikely to spend $$$, so album + ticket sales are usually indicative of fandom growth, rather than GP support. in contrast, charts are a stronger showing of GP support. streaming helps somewhat, but is usually outpaced by the sheer numbers from the GP actually listening to the song. i expect to see ITZY transitioning to a more fandom-based business model in a few years time as they become a more senior group!

you might argue that nayeon’s solo was a GP hit, and you’re right! BUT that’s a solo debut, which imo is different from a group comeback. even though nayeon is arguably one of the more popular members, not all of TWICE’s name recognition will transfer to nayeon — someone knowing who TWICE is doesn’t necessarily mean they will know nayeon too. in order for nayeon to build a strong solo career, she needs to grow her own fanbase as much as possible, so that still means focusing on GP support as part of the strategy. so while i think TWICE is fandom-first now, upcoming solo debuts will aim to cater to the GP

i want to see TWICE have long and healthy careers, especially as they grow older and pursue their future post-idol paths! whatever it is, i’ll be supporting 💖

do you agree with my theory or do you think it doesn’t hold up? let me know in the comments, i’d love to discuss!

They're also shifting towards a larger female fanbase too, both overseas and in Korea.

They're recognized, loved and respected. The gp doesn't react to them in the way they did when Twice was focused on a viral strategy, but they're still highly loved if u see their reaction to their individual activities in programs, etc.

Real momentum and power can be seen more in the rating they bring, money, etc.; rather than just views or other numbers (which are relevant but not necessarily equal to power or recognition).

Twice doesn't need a teenage gg's estrategy anymore and that's healthy and good.
